Father and mother of a newborn child will now have to record their religion separately while registering the birth of the child, according to Model Rules drafted by the Home ministry. Earlier, only the family’s religion was recorded in birth registers.

In the last Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was passed that allows the use of a birth certificate as a single document for admission to an educational institution, issuance of a driving licence, preparation of voter list, Aadhaar number, registration of marriage or appointment to a government job. The Bill makes provisions for digital registration and electronic delivery of certificates of births and deaths.
