Bengaluru: Kunigal police from Tumakuru arrested five individuals, including three women, on charges of selling a newborn boy for Rs 60,000 on Feb 22.

The accused include the newborn's unmarried mother, and the  child's father A Srinanda. The child's grand aunt Jyoti and anganwadi worker Jyoti, both from Magadi, and the purchaser of the baby, Mubarak Pasha are the others arrested. All five were released on station bail.

The incident came to light on Monday when a few staff from Kunigal govt hospital alerted police about the ‘talks' of a baby sale between a few persons. "Rushing to the spot, we questioned the suspects and found that the two-day-old boy was sold for Rs 60,000. However, the infant was still with the mother," an investigating officer said.

"As the child's mother became pregnant from Srinanda, and they were not married, they decided to sell the baby. Jyoti contacted her friend Jyoti, seeking her help in  connecting with a potential buyer. Jyoti knew that Mubarak Pasha was childless and was looking to adopt a child. The deal was set at Rs 60,000. Mubarak came to the hospital to see the baby. Pasha already paid the money to Srinanda," the officer added.

The child has been sent to the Santwana Kendra  in Tumakuru.
